Overcast to start with
Only occasional patches of snow today as we came through what is known as the Canadian desert. For scenery we transferred our gaze and cameras downwards to the rapids and river that churned beside or below us. Hells Gate rapids looked like a wild ride for kayakers. The changes in the river flow were fascinating to watch and the hours passed quickly.
As we came through Avalanche Alley we saw the truck on stand-by to go out and clear the tracks if there was a landslide and the shelters built at various dangerous spots to protect the tracks from falling rocks. We passed through without incident.
Sighted the occasional goat or long horned sheep. Saw quite a few osprey and eagle nests, some woth little white heads sticking out.
The food was delicious as yesterday but a more moderate amount was on offer. Some of the passengers were a little quieter today.
We were only delayed once, for about 30 minutes, waiting for 3 goods trains to pass. As we travelled beside Kamloops Lake we could see goods train after goods train on the line running along the shoreline opposite.f
The station team were out to meet us with flags and welcome waves as we pulled into the station. It is a tradition that whever the train leabves or arrives they line up with the Canadian and Rocky Mountaineer flags and wave the train in or off, sometimes waving in the cold for 10 minutes.
We have been impressed with the Canadians working in hospitality everywhere. They are so friendly and helpful.
BTW Sean, the Carriage Manager played ice hockey in Newcastle.
Arrived at hotel by 6 pm. Another room with stunning views, even from the toilet!
